Sometimes our friends - or even adults - can say things about our adoption story that hurt our feelings. Most of the time this is just because they don't know what to say or how to say it. Times like these are great opportunities to teach people how to describe adoption in a positive way.


Here are some easy words and phrases you can start teaching your friends when it comes to talking about your adoption story!


Instead of: Say:

Given up for adoption Made an adoption plan or Chose adoption

Real Mom or Real Dad Birthmom and Birthdad

I am adopted or You are adopted I was adopted or You were adopted

Your adopted family Your Family
